Midland ISD is excited to announce STEM+M, a new partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), made possible through the generous support of the Scharbauer Foundation. This partnership, aligned with MISD's "Engage and Act" initiative, supports and builds on the Health Science opportunities already in place within the district's CTE program.

The collaboration will bring a STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine) program to students. Designed as a pre-pre-med initiative, the program aims to spark early interest in the medical field and prepare students for future health science careers.
Students entering seventh grade this fall will have the opportunity to apply to be a part of the first STEM+M cohort, which begins with a neuroscience elective. When the cohort reaches eighth grade, students will take an elective in scientific decision-making. Additionally, students entering ninth grade in the fall can apply for the Biomedical Science pathway, further expanding their educational options in health sciences.
"This will allow us to introduce students to advanced medical and scientific topics, laying a strong foundation for those interested in pursuing a medical pathway," said MISD Teaching and Learning Executive Director Dr. Amanda Melchor. "Our goal is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals, scientists, and innovators."
Students who apply for the program must demonstrate strong grades and interest in science and math and a commitment to hands-on experimentation and collaborative learning.
As a part of the partnership, BCM will play a pivotal role in curriculum development and teacher training.
"This partnership represents a significant step forward for Midland ISD," said MISD CTE Executive Director Jeff Horner. "STEM+M will prepare students for academic and professional success and empower them to become future healthcare leaders."
Midland ISD is thankful to the Scharbauer Foundation for making this initiative possible and looks forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have on students and the broader community. Through this partnership, Midland ISD demonstrates its commitment to providing innovative educational opportunities to prepare students for success.
